Victoria Hunt - Artist
I make life size sculptures of small dogs from chicken wire and papier maché. Each one is unique and constructed with no pre-fabrication involved. They are covered in text to hold the viewer’s attention, and the longer you look at them, the more you see. I like to put thought into this and ensure that there is a connection to the breed’s history, and their personality. For me, the appeal of dogs lies in this huge variety, and I have found it to be an endless source of inspiration, and a theme I keep returning to. The challenge is in trying to capture it and to make work that is quirky, unusual and contains some humour.
Paper maché is a fantastic medium to work in. It not only is very versatile and allows me to integrate text into the final layer, but the dogs can be painted with naturalistic colours and I can use shredded paper for the longer haired breeds, attributes that make my sculptures distinctive and not qualities to be found elsewhere.
Previous buyers have included those who recognise a familiar breed, and those who just want a unique and quirky piece of artwork to decorate their room and provide a talking point.
